What your group plan covers

Local 3080 group life: the floor, not the ceiling.

Local 3080's negotiated group life benefit provides basic death benefit coverage for active members — in a range from the low tens of thousands up into the mid-hundred-thousands depending on rank, tier, and CBA vintage. Your Summary Plan Description has your actual number — and Justin is happy to pull it with you on a free 15-minute call.

That's real value. But three structural gaps exist in virtually every union group plan — including this one.

1. Retirement reduces — or eliminates — coverage

For most Local 3080 retirees, group life benefits step down substantially at 65 and end entirely at a specified age beyond that. The exact schedule is in your Summary Plan Description.

2. Group coverage doesn't follow you between locals

If you transfer, change contractors, or leave the trade for any reason, Local 3080 group coverage doesn't travel with you. You typically have a narrow conversion window with higher-than-market rates.

3. The amount isn't sized to your family's need

Most working families need 8–10× annual income in total death benefit. Local 3080's group plan provides 1–2× — it fills the floor but leaves the room empty.

The Broward County firefighter coalition

Metro-Broward Professional Firefighters Local 3080 was originally formed on January 16, 1989 when several Broward municipalities consolidated their firefighter bargaining under one banner — an unusual structural arrangement in Florida, where most locals represent a single city department. Today Local 3080 represents more than 800 firefighters and paramedics serving 11 cities in Broward County, including Coral Springs (whose department also serves the City of Parkland), Plantation, Lauderhill, Tamarac, Sunrise, and several of the western Broward suburbs. That coalition structure means a single 3080 member's exact employer — and their specific group life benefit — depends on which of the 11 municipal departments they work for.

The local is operating in an unusually fluid moment for Broward fire service. In April 2026, Broward County commissioners unanimously voted to commission a feasibility assessment examining whether the county should retake control of firefighting duties from the Broward Sheriff's Office — a structural conversation that could reshape how Broward fire services are delivered for years. Whatever that study concludes, any significant restructuring of BSO's fire operations would ripple through Local 3080's member benefits, CBAs, and group life arrangements.

And then there is Parkland. Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department members — core Local 3080 territory — were first responders to the February 14, 2018 mass casualty event at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. That day is permanently part of how 3080 crews think about PTSD, cancer risk from prolonged scene exposure, and what survivor benefits actually need to cover.

Broward's median home value sits in the mid-$540,000s. A 3080 firefighter with a Broward mortgage, a working or stay-at-home spouse, and kids easily needs coverage well into six figures — and that number doesn't go down after retirement or an employer change. Privately-owned, portable whole-life coverage is how you keep the plan stable across those transitions.
