Did you know? Most people overestimate the cost of life insurance by 3× — for many healthy adults, coverage runs less than $1 a day. — LIMRA

What your group plan covers

Local 421 group life: the floor, not the ceiling.

Local 421's negotiated group life benefit provides basic death benefit coverage for active members — in a range from the low tens of thousands up into the mid-hundred-thousands depending on rank, tier, and CBA vintage. Your Summary Plan Description has your actual number — and Justin is happy to pull it with you on a free 15-minute call.

That's real value. But three structural gaps exist in virtually every union group plan — including this one.

1. Retirement reduces — or eliminates — coverage

For most Local 421 retirees, group life benefits step down substantially at 65 and end entirely at a specified age beyond that. The exact schedule is in your Summary Plan Description.

2. Group coverage doesn't follow you between locals

If you transfer, change contractors, or leave the trade for any reason, Local 421 group coverage doesn't travel with you. You typically have a narrow conversion window with higher-than-market rates.

3. The amount isn't sized to your family's need

Most working families need 8–10× annual income in total death benefit. Local 421's group plan provides 1–2× — it fills the floor but leaves the room empty.

The UA local born from a 1997 consolidation

UA Local 421 was chartered on October 1, 1997 through the consolidation of five different UA locals in North and South Carolina. It's headquartered in Charleston, SC with satellite offices and training centers in Raleigh and Charlotte, NC. Membership sits around 1,400 — including roughly 100 specialized Lead Burners who are represented throughout the United States. That consolidated structure means a 421 member's work can take them anywhere from the Lowcountry port expansion to Research Triangle biopharma work to Charlotte commercial construction.

The Charleston Lowcountry specifically is in the middle of one of the South's largest industrial expansion cycles. Boeing's 787 campus in North Charleston, the Volvo plant in Berkeley County, the Mercedes-Benz Vans facility, and the port's long-running container terminal expansion all pull heavily on UA pipe-trade labor. A 421 member may spend six months at Boeing, then six on a hospital in Mount Pleasant, then a year at a data center buildout near Summerville. Each of those jobs has its own payroll, its own benefits administration, and its own employer-tied group life coverage. None of it follows you.

Charleston-metro median home values in the mid-$500,000s put 421 members with a family in the same coverage-need range as most Miami or Fort Lauderdale earners. South Carolina's right-to-work framework constrains what the CBA can deliver on group benefits — which makes privately-owned, portable whole-life coverage more important here than in stronger-CBA states. Lock it in at your current age, before the underwriting gets harder.
