Did you know? Most people overestimate the cost of life insurance by 3× — for many healthy adults, coverage runs less than $1 a day. — LIMRA

What your group plan covers

Local 134 group life: the floor, not the ceiling.

Local 134's negotiated group life benefit provides basic death benefit coverage for active members — in a range from the low tens of thousands up into the mid-hundred-thousands depending on rank, tier, and CBA vintage. Your Summary Plan Description has your actual number — and Justin is happy to pull it with you on a free 15-minute call.

That's real value. But three structural gaps exist in virtually every union group plan — including this one.

1. Retirement reduces — or eliminates — coverage

For most Local 134 retirees, group life benefits step down substantially at 65 and end entirely at a specified age beyond that. The exact schedule is in your Summary Plan Description.

2. Group coverage doesn't follow you between locals

If you transfer, change contractors, or leave the trade for any reason, Local 134 group coverage doesn't travel with you. You typically have a narrow conversion window with higher-than-market rates.

3. The amount isn't sized to your family's need

Most working families need 8–10× annual income in total death benefit. Local 134's group plan provides 1–2× — it fills the floor but leaves the room empty.

The local behind Atlanta Fire Rescue

Local 134 — Atlanta Professional Fire Fighters — represents the more than 1,000 firefighters and paramedics of Atlanta Fire Rescue (AFR). AFR serves the 137-square-mile City of Atlanta through 35 fire stations, with response territory that includes Hartsfield-Jackson — the world's busiest passenger airport — and the dense urban core through Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead. Local 134 is also the named bargaining unit in one of the most consequential recent labor stories in the Southern fire service.

In April 2025 the Atlanta City Council unanimously ratified Local 134's first-ever collective bargaining agreement — a genuine historic win after decades of advocacy in a state with no statewide public-sector CBA rights. What followed was a stand-off: the mayor initially declined to sign, Local 134 filed suit for breach of contract in March 2026, and the terms of group benefits — including life insurance — have been at the center of what members actually see in their next paychecks. If you're a Local 134 member right now, your group life benefit could shift materially depending on how the CBA dispute settles.

That's exactly the scenario a personal whole-life policy is meant to hedge. It's yours. It doesn't change when the mayor does, when the CBA does, or when you retire. Atlanta-metro median home values near $400,000 mean any serious coverage conversation starts above $500,000 in total death benefit.
